While it may be surprising at first, surely it isn't as shocking or weird as Monica dating someone who was practically a father figure to her. When he talks about things to Monica, she realizes that she's not fine with the fling thing, and proposes to Richard that they get together again.

He reminds her that while they could get back together, they would still be facing the same issues that caused them to break up in the first place, so the two agree for their own sake not to keep seeing each other anymore, but decide to have one last night of passion. Monica, who is now dating Chandler, tells Phoebe and Rachel that she ran into Richard and they had lunch and that she now feels nothing for him.

When Chandler finds out during the group's trip to Las Vegas, the two have a big fight.
