One can only wonder if simuldubs would have become the norm if Space Dandy had not proved they were worth the effort.
ASA was never a big deal. It did not attract sponsors and at best it kept pace with the comedy portion of Adult Swim. Something needed to prove action programming still had value for Adult Swim and Toonami did exactly that. If Toonami was still targeting kids in , Naruto Shippuden is unlikely to be airing anywhere now and if you think any other network was going to try One Piece , you are sadly mistaken.
While you can argue streaming makes Toonami broadcasts obsolete, US television is nonetheless richer for having it. Anime Streaming is Where it is Today, Partially Due to the Absence of Toonami Naruto Shippuden has and probably always will be the most watched anime on Hulu, Dragon Ball Z never was despite being ridiculously popular, and I am certain that is because the most convenient way to watch Shippuden by was streaming.
Naruto was tremendously popular as a fansub before it was brought to Toonami and likewise, Shippuden was the must-see fansub until TV Tokyo and Viz Media took advantage of that interest with an official simulcast.
I have to imagine a major reason that officially subbed Shippuden got a big push was due to CN not obtaining the license. Dub fans became sub fans as Viz looked for another broadcaster. The timing was right to absorb the hungry Naruto fan base and Crunchyroll did exactly that.
While CR had several decently popular shows, Shippuden was easily the largest draw and without it in that moment, Crunchyroll might not be the success story it is today.
There were plenty of false starts and short-lived platforms but Crunchyroll was able to build a huge library and prove the concept was viable. They probably needed that push toward simulcasting which they may not have had if they were fixated on delivering freshly dubbed episodes to Cartoon Network.
On a broader scope, Crunchyroll intentionally set out to fill the void Toonami left behind and became a venue that was easily accessible to potential fans. In prior years, television was just about the only way an anime was going to reach a very wide audience.
We can only speculate what could have happened. On Saturday morning, September 20, , at the Anime Weekend Atlanta convention in Atlanta, Georgia, Cartoon Network announced that they had canceled the Toonami block due to low ratings. Toonami then aired its final transmission that same evening. On April 13, , the series was moved to the AM time slot. Writer-director Genndy Tartakovsky promises the new season of Samurai Jack is the last one.
His stylish animated series, about a feudal Japanese samurai stuck in a dystopian far future launched in , and ran for four seasons on Cartoon Network. A crossbreed of folk art, classic manga, cyberpunk, and Sunday funnies, Samurai Jack was a cartoon like no other. Rich in genre, narrative, and—most noticeably—visual experimentation, the show was a critical wunderkind, winning four prime-time Emmy Awards in its original four-season run. The first four seasons of Samurai Jack which originally aired on Cartoon Network from to , comprising four seasons, was intended for kids.
The fifth and final season was a darker, more adult, and mature version of the acclaimed show. It is designed for children age 7 and above. The fourth season of Samurai Jack ended in without a satisfying conclusion, leaving Jack, his past, and the fate of the world hanging in the balance. The bad news: Season 5, and Samurai Jack itself, is now over. It ends on a startling, revelatory moment — the first time the new Adult Swim-sanctioned Samurai Jack trades in blue robot oil for the bright, tomato-red blood of a human being.
Serialized storytelling and doubling down on its core premise makes this revival of a the legendary cartoon one of the best things on TV. The move to Adult Swim acknowledges the fans who have stuck with the series and are now in their 20s and 30s. Samurai Jack airs Saturdays at 11 p. That being said, Samurai Jack is still one of the most consistent series when it comes to quality.
Even when the fifth season and the first four seasons are compared, there is not that much of a difference in their quality.
Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time is a great-playing game that falls just a bit short of being a well-crafted overall experience. Fans of the show will enjoy the game, while those just looking for a well-crafted action game may be disappointed. With the exception of digitally drawn backgrounds, all the character animation and storyboarding is still done the old-fashioned way. The show tells about a Japanese samurai embarks on a mission to defeat the evil wizard Aku.
Originally, the reason Samurai Jack was always fighting robots in the original show was because Cartoon Network did not allow blood.
