The name stands for the original promise with God to the descendants of Abraham in particular prior to the coming of Jesus Christ in the New Testament or the new promise. The Old Testament contains the creation of the universe, the history of the patriarchs, the exodus from Egypt, the formation of Israel as a nation, the subsequent decline and fall of the nation, the Prophets who spoke for God , and the Wisdom Books.

The name refers to the new covenant or promise between God and humanity through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The New Testament chronicles the life and ministry of Jesus, the growth and impact of the early church, and instructive letters to early churches. Rather, the so-called Major prophets are the longer Prophetic books, while the Minor Prophets are a collection of shorter books. Here we see another difference in organization between the Tanakh and Old Testament.

In the Hebrew scriptures the twelve minor prophets are compiled together into one volume or book, called The Twelve. In the Christian Bible, each prophet is separated into an individual book. Comprised of many texts by many human authors, over an expansive period of time, and in an array of literary genres and styles, the Old Testament canon is intended to point us to God and to encourage us to live rightly.

Through the laws, historical accounts, words of worship and wisdom, and prophetic calls, the Old Testament sets the stage for Gospel, introducing us to a God who loves the world so much that He would send us His son, Jesus Christ. Skip to content.

Ezekiel foresees the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and the judgment awaiting rebellious Judah. But he also gives us a glimpse of the new relationship God plans to make with His people. They contain major prophecies.

Yes, the Roman Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox church included those books in their list of divinely inspired canon.

But the reformers excluded those books you named in an attempt to recognize a canon that was rooted in centuries of Jewish and Christian tradition. For starters, these books do not claim the same kind of authority as the OT writings. The greatest Jewish historian of the first century, Josephus writes in Against Apion that these writings were not divine.
